How Many Units of Botox Are Used for the Forehead?
The forehead is more complex than many patients realize.
The frontalis muscle raises the eyebrows. Because of this, simply relaxing the forehead without considering the muscles that pull the brows downward can affect brow position and facial balance.
For FDA-labeled treatment of moderate to severe forehead lines, Botox Cosmetic is administered as 20 units in the forehead together with 20 units in the glabellar region, for a total of 40 units.
This is one of the reasons your injector needs to look at your entire upper face, rather than treating individual wrinkles in isolation.
How Many Units of Botox Are Used for Crow’s Feet?
Crow’s feet are the lines that develop around the outer corners of the eyes when we smile or squint.
The FDA-recommended Botox Cosmetic dose for moderate to severe lateral canthal lines is 24 units total, divided between both sides.
Your individual anatomy, muscle movement, and goals still need to be evaluated before treatment.
Does More Botox Mean I’ll Look More Frozen?
Not necessarily.
One of the biggest misconceptions about Botox is that fewer units automatically create a more natural result.
A natural result depends on much more than the total number of units.
It depends on:
- Your anatomy
- Which muscles are treated
- Muscle strength
- Injection placement
- Dose distribution
- Facial balance
- Your desired level of movement
The goal isn’t simply to use the least Botox possible. The goal is to use an appropriate dose in the appropriate muscles to create the desired result safely.
Under-treating a strong muscle may lead to a shorter duration or an incomplete result, while inappropriate placement or dosing can negatively affect facial balance.

One may have a smaller forehead, relatively mild muscle activity, and naturally low-set brows.
The other may have a larger forehead, very strong muscle movement, and completely different brow anatomy.
Treating those patients identically wouldn’t make sense.
